Agnes Scott College Honors Wasfia Nazreen

Wasfia Nazreen was invited by her alma mater to grace the stage of her old stomping ground as a commencement speaker to the Class of 2024. This was a high bar to lift, with the likes of past speakers including Alice Walker, Oprah Winfrey, Hillary Clinton— amongst others.

Following Wasfia’s address to the Class of 2024, President Leocadia I. Zak, the 9th and current president of the college held a reception in honor of Wasfia Nazreen. Friends and family, the Board of Trustees and Deans of the College, alongside Studio Arts, Psychology, Literature, Global Studies, Sports and Theatre faculties of Agnes Scott College (ASC) and Emory University were present. Retired professors of the college, who once taught Wasfia for undergrad, travelled from afar to join the celebrations.

ASC had acquired a copy of Wasfia’s trademark “marriage proposal” portrait back in 2016 and this was the first time she saw it displayed. Also seen guests enjoying vegan meal options, which was non-existent during her time in college and she had gone on a hunger-strike on campus at the age of 19 and in the words of her professors: “demanding options and causing trouble, so the college had to serve!” ASC, since 2016, has the diverse SUMMIT meal-plan option for all students.
